Or if you're due for a video card upgrade anyhow, getting a GTX 650 or newer or an HD 7770/R7 250X or newer will come with free high-performance capture software. I'd really recommend buying one of these if you're serious about getting into recording (unless you happen to be able to take advantage of the hardware accelerated ones)

The D3DGear trial has a small watermark at the top of the screen, but it's a good way to see how good it is. You can download a free trial of both, though I didn't personally have luck with the Dxtory free trial (didn't record for some reason). Both of them are definitely worth the price. once it gets compressed on YouTube you can't see the difference anyhow.
Also, I find that the difference in quality is only noticeable in the raw file. Dxtory has better quality video and more flexibility with codecs and other options, while D3DGear has a slightly smaller performance hit and has way smaller file sizes. that said, Dxtory and D3DGear both provide really good recording performance (in my experience, D3DGear is better) and they cost about $35. If you don't have the hardware that the above options require to operate smoothly, then I don't know of any free high-performance capture softwares. The quality isn't phenomenal, but if you have an Intel sandy bridge or later CPU with integrated graphics on it, you can record and stream gameplay without it impacting your performance much at all. MSI Afterburner and OBS (OpenBroadcasterSoftware) also both support Intel QuickSync encoding. It said I still had 30, but it felt like it was refreshing half the screen at a time or something or there were different amounts of time between each refresh. from like 50 to a ridiculously choppy framerate. but it didn't work on my GTX 560 and resulted in stupid performance hit. Though I've heard that it can leverage either the encoder on video cards (I'm guessing GTX 650 and later, and I've heard Radeon HD 5800 and later, but I don't know 100%).
You could give MSI Afterburner a try (it's a pretty big hit in my experience though). If you don't have an HD 7000/R 200 card, or if you have a GTX card from the 500 or earlier series, then I'm afraid I don't know of any decent free softwares. Have you tried Nvidia Shadowplay (if you have a GTX 650 or newer) or AMD GameDVR (with the Raptr/AMD Gaming Evolved app, with HD 7000 or newer)? They both have almost zero impact on performance, like 3 frames per second at most, and that's recording at 1080P. I don't know of many really good free recording software, most are pretty awful.
